For some, the promised land is a return home. The British Army and Navy had been campaigning for seven years against Napoleon in Portugal and Spain. Then in 1814 a peace treaty sent Napoleon into exile. The sailors had been away so long that many had Spanish girlfriends, wives and even children. When the command went out to embark, they were ordered to leave behind their families on the quayside. The sailors were happy to go home at last, but sad for the women they had to leave behind. This song is also a nostalgic one for me now that I am an ex-patriot myself. The names of the headlands on the south coast of England are familiar to anyone who has listened to the BBC shipping forecast, reminding us that we are both threatened and protected by the sea. It is the most patriotic song I sing, and it's about loving foreigners.

Für Manche bedeutet das Land der Verheißung: Heimkehren. Die britische Armee und Flotte hatte sieben Jahre gegen Napoleon in Portugal und Spanien gekämpft, bis im Jahr 1814 ein Friedensvertrag geschlossen wurde, der Napoleon ins Exil verbannte. Viele Soldaten waren so lange fernab der Heimat gewesen, dass sie nun spanische Freundinnen, Frauen und sogar Kinder hatten. Als der Befehl zum Einschiffen kam, wurden die britischen Soldaten aufgefordert, ihren Famlien am Kai Lebewohl zu sagen und in die Heimat zurückzukehren. Obwohl glücklich, endlich nach Großbritannien zurückkehren zu können, war da der Schmerz, ihre Frauen und Kinder zurücklassen zu müssen. Als jemand, der weit weg von seiner Heimat lebt, hat dieses Lied auch für mich etwas Wehmütiges. Jedem, der sich die BBC Seewettervorhersage angehört hat, sind wohl die Namen der Landzungen an der Küste Südenglands vertraut. Sie erinnern uns, dass das Meer für uns sowohl Schutz als auch Bedrohung ist. Dies ist das patriotischste Lied, das ich singe, und es handelt von der Liebe zu Fremden.
