about

An old man in Sweden told me a story. He came from a small town near Leipzig in eastern Germany. As a child he survived the terrible bombing in WWII and the Russian occupation too, which he said was worse. In 1949 his father decided to risk everything and sail the family to Sweden in a tiny yacht in the night and in a storm. The journey took three days but they survived, just, and built a new life for themselves in Sweden. Throughout the 1940s many Germans, Poles, Estonians and others made a similar journey across the Baltic in tiny boats. No one knows how many drowned. There is a memorial to them in the cathedral in Visby.
There is nothing new about boat people or the impulses that drive them, which are hope, necessity, and desperation. We think of the migrants in the Mediterranean as a tragedy, as an immigration problem for Europe. It is much more than that. It's part of a long human story. And it's heroic. The Scots, Irish, Swedes and others that went to America, the Polynesians settling the Pacific islands, the Danes and Saxons that settled England. A risky journey in an overcrowded leaky boat, not much has changed.
It's a very human impulse. To stand on that beach, to look out at the sea and dream. On the other side of the horizon, however dangerous the journey, there is at least a chance of a decent life. A promised land.
