I imagine the astronomer is a lonely figure, staying up all night on the top of a mountain looking through a telescope with a bobble hat, a scarf and a drip on the end of his nose. The names given to the features on the moon may say more about the namer than the named. Jesuit priest Giovanni Battista Riccioli became an astronomer to prove Galileo wrong. But the more he looked at the heavens through his telescope, the less convinced he was in the biblical explanation of the universe. As he slowly lost his faith his loneliness was revealed in the way he named the features on the moon. Oceanus Procellarum - The Ocean Of Storms, Lacus Somniorum - The Lake Of Dreams, Mare Frigoris - The Sea of Cold, Lacus Doloris - The Lake Of Sorrow, Mare Tranquillitatis - The Sea Of Tranquillity.

Astronomen/Himmelforscher/Sternenforscher stelle ich mir als einen ziemlich einsamen Beruf vor; die ganze Nacht sitzt man auf einer Bergspitze, das Teleskop an den Augen, eine Pudelmütze auf dem Kopf, einen Schal um den Hals und einen Tropfen an der Nase, der jeden Moment hinunterzufallen droht. Die Namen, die man den Merkmalen des Mondes gegeben hat, sagen wahrscheinlich mehr über den Namensgeber aus als über das Benannte. Der Jesuitenpriester Giovanni Battista Riccioli wurde Astronom, um Galileo zu widerlegen. Doch je mehr er den Himmel mit seinem Teleskop erkundete, desto weniger überzeugten ihn die biblischen Erklärungen des Universums, und so nach und nach verlor er seinen Glauben. Die Benennung der Mond-Merkmale widerspiegelt die Einsamkeit, die Battista Riccioli damals umgab: Oceanus Procellarum/ Ozean der Stürme, Lacus Somniorum / See der Träume, Mare Frigoris / Meer der Kälte, Lacus Doloris / See der Qual, Mare Tranquillitatis / Meer der Ruhe.
